The Programa de Cooperación INTERREG V-A España-Portugal MAC (Madeira-Azores-Canarias) 2014-2020 is the main instrument that the peripheral regions of Spain and Portugal have to offer an effective response to the common challenges they face in innovation, competitiveness, internationalization and sustainable development. Its budget, for the entire period, is 132,269,910 euros, of which 112,429,420 are contributed by the Fondo Europeo de Desarrollo Regional (FEDER). The Cooperation Area is made up of the Macaronesian islands of Madeira, Azores and the Canary Islands and third countries, geographically close, that have been invited to participate in the program: Cape Verde, Senegal and Mauritania. This has allowed to expand the natural space of socio-economic and cultural influence and the possibilities of cooperation.

Within the framework of Axis 3 of the INTERREG MAC Cooperation Program, which promotes adaptation to climate change and the prevention and management of risks, is the project “Fortalecimiento de las Capacidades de I+D+I para la Monitorización de la Actividad Volcánica en la Macaronesia” (VOLRISKMAC MAC/3.5b/124) and the project “Fortalecimiento de las Capacidades de I+D+I para el desarrollo de la Resiliencia frente a Emergencias Volcánicas en la Macaronesia” (VOLRISKMAC II MAC2/3.5b/328) in which numerous institutions of Macaronesia participate, within which the Instituto Volcanológico de Canarias (INVOLCAN) acts as Principal Beneficiary of both projects.
